The Hunter in South Fork
In early fall, the public lands in the South Fork area are extremely popular with hunters — bow, black powder and rifle included. These groups can find elk, deer, bighorn sheep, Moose, Bears and Mountain Lions. You can find tips about licensing, hot-spots, secret-spots, camping spots and more from local guides and supply stores in the region. With some lodging, you can have a comfy place to sleep after a full day of hunting!
Hunting not only delivers a unique recreational experience, it also helps with wildlife management in the area. Many of the Big Game licenses are distributed each year through a lottery system. The number of available tags is based on current wildlife management information. Over-the-counter licenses are also available for many types of animals, but most have bag limits and/or a limited season.
To learn more about three hunting units (76, 79 and 80) and over 100 huntable species, visit the Colorado Parks & Wildlife website here.
